I was hired as a graphic designer by WCJB TV20 News upon moving back to Gainesville after college. I designed on-air graphics using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Chyron and was in the control room to queue the graphics for air. I was promoted to director when the station transitioned to using a Grass Valley Automated Production System. Control room operations such as audio engineer, robotic camera operator, graphic designer, and director/technical director were consolidated into one position where the director would run the broadcast through one control system.
I directed broadcasts of Morning Edition and the weekend news by coming in early to review the script written by the producers, anchors, reporters, and news directors. I’d pre-program the necessary control room functions and then advance through them live on-air. It was an interesting job, but the hours were really rough.
