Diversity Education: Enhancing Our Community Through Inclusion
“In spring 2009, Shayla Herndon-Edmunds, Assistant to the Senior Vice President & CFO, made a recommendation to the Provost to offer learning programs for employees on the Reynolda Campus designed to (1) support the University’s commitment to making Wake Forest a more diverse and inclusive community and (2) emphasize the importance of staff in achieving that goal. Provost Jill Tiefenthaler supported the idea and commissioned Ms. Herndon-Edmunds and Assistant Provost Barbee Oakes to develop and implement the GateKeepers Workshop Initiative. In recognition that diversity and inclusiveness transcend race, religion, age, gender, ability, sexual orientation, and myriad invisible traits that impact engagement, a “gatekeeper” is defined as any member of the Wake Forest community who represents the University through his or her interaction with students, faculty, staff, and other constituents.”
