In Spring 2011, my thesis partner and I were developing a documentary about the North Carolina Symphony for the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University. We wanted to follow the preparation for one of the state symphony’s annual events and inter-cut this storyline with character profiles of musicians and directors to show their commitment to the mastery of their craft, as well as their dedication to keeping classical music relevant in North Carolina’s culture.
My co-director and I had multiple meetings with the symphony’s public relations team and one with their board of directors. We got the green light from our professors to produce this as our thesis film before the symphony’s CEO put a kibosh on the entire project without any explanation or ever having any direct communication with us.
While we never had the opportunity to shoot anything ourselves, the NC Symphony provided us with some materials so we could put together a pitch tape for a class assignment. I edited this preview using Final Cut Pro and designed the graphics using a combination of Photoshop and After Effects.
